Der zehnjährige Bill (Sebastian Rice-Edwards) lebt in einem Londoner Vorort, während der II. Weltkrieg das kleinbürgerliche Familienidyll durcheinander bringt. Bills Vater (David Hayman) wird in die Armee eingezogen; seine Mutter Grace (Sarah Miles), seine Schwester und er bleiben allein zurück. Doch Bill läßt sich von diesen Tatsachen nicht seinen kindlichen Spaß verderben. Seine Schule wird zerbombt, so daß er den langweiligen Unterricht nicht mehr besuchen muß. Außerdem kann man Bombensplitter tauschen und es gibt jede Nacht ein tolles Feuerwerk. Als dann noch ein deutsches Flugzeug abgeschossen wird, und der Pilot mit einem Fallschirm in seinem Vorgarten landet, ist das Durcheinander perfekt... John Boorman´s Hope & Glory wurde für 5 Oscars nominiert.
